CIP-002 impact rating helper

Pick an asset, answer a few questions and see which Attachment 1 criterion it likely meets, with the reasoning. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

1What kind of asset is it?
2Which functional obligations are performed there?

How to use the result

Categorization is done for each BES Cyber System at each asset, and the highest applicable criterion wins. Record the criterion, the numbers behind it (MW, MVAR, weighted value) and the date, then review it at least every 15 calendar months under R2. Read the full CIP-002 guide for the process and common audit findings.

The 2.5 weighted value, explained

For a station operating between 200 kV and 499 kV, add 700 for each 200–299 kV line and 1,300 for each 300–499 kV line connected to another Transmission station or substation (500 kV lines count as 0 here because criterion 2.4 already covers them). If the station connects at 200 kV or higher to three or more other stations and the total exceeds 3,000, its BES Cyber Systems are medium impact.
